Contaminated Meat and Govt Bribes: Fresh Scandal Rocks Brazil

According to the AVA's list of approved countries to export raw and processed meat products, as well as processed eggs, to Singapore, Brazil is allowed to export beef, pork and poultry here. Investigators also found evidence that some companies manipulated certificates on meat for export to Spain and Italy.

The decision is a blow to Brazil, one of the world's largest exporters of meat. The investigation is focused on the actions of Brazilian Federal Meat Inspectors.

In a related development, the Ministry of Agriculture, represented by the General Authority for Veterinary Services, chose to review all processed meat and poultry shipments imported from Brazil to ensure that health and safety measures have been properly applied.

Police said among those arrested were two JBS employees and three BRF employees.

A poultry-processing plant run by the multinational BRF group and two meat-processing plants operated by the local Peccin company were shut down, the agriculture ministry said.

Mr Temer called an emergency meeting on Sunday with ambassadors of several countries.

In some cases, carcinogenic chemicals had been used to mask the smell of the meat, authorities confirmed.

Then, sometime this afternoon, Royal Jordanian deleted that tweet , further adding to the confusion. The airline also indicated that the policy will go into effect on Tuesday March 21, 2017.

Ricardo Santin, ABPA's vice president of markets, said two of the suspended plants process poultry, one beef and the other horse meat.

JBS said: "The company vehemently repudiates any adoption of practices related to the adulteration of products".

BRF could prove more vulnerable to the scandal since a larger share of its operations are physically based in Brazil, while JBS derives most of its sales from overseas, according to a report by Goldman Sachs analysts led by Luca Cipiccia.

The scandal "could be enough to compromise temporarily Brazilian protein's acceptance worldwide", Credit Suisse Securities analyst Victor Saragiotto wrote in a Monday note to clients.

"We have to consider the scale of this alleged fraud and the reported extent of official involvement because it appears very considerable indeed and that has to mean a systemic problem which can only be countered by a systemic and independent investigation and verification of the produce that the Brazilians have been exporting", he said.

European farmers' body, Copa, said the scandal underlined the importance of ensuring that imports of meat from South America met the EU's high safety and traceability standards. "Should I eat it or just throw it all away?"
