Mount Etna Volcano Erupts

Mount Etna Volcano Erupts

Its last major eruption was in 1992.

Italy's Mount Etna has consistently erupted for thousands of years, as shown in this picture from October 30, 2002.

Mount Etna is on the east coast of Sicily.

At least eight people were injured as scientists fled for safety after the eruption in Sicily.

This was the third incident at Mt. Etna, which overlooks the city of Catania, in a span of three weeks.

If ash is still spewing from the volcano, a shift in winds could send ash toward Catania on Friday afternoon and evening.

"Should re-iterate - we are all ok - people brought off mountain quickly by the excellent rescue team".

Mount Etna is one of Europe's most active volcanoes, and had begun erupting on the morning of March 15. The lava bursts reached almost 650 feet high, the institute said in a report.

The wickets of Temba Bavuma and Keshav Maharaj in quick succession by Trent Boult helped hasten the end of South Africa's innings. Shortly after his dismissal, the players left the field due to bad light after just 20 minutes of action.

"The material thrown into the air fell back down, striking the heads and bodies of people who were closest", said the president of an Italian Alpine Club.

A BBC journalist and camerawoman on assignment at the volcano were among the injured. But that's where several tourists and journalists found themselves when Mt. Etna erupted on Thursday.

A new lava flow started from the south-eastern crater on Wednesday and was advancing with a temperature above 1000 degrees Celsius in an area covered by snow.

She reported that the group was pelted with boiling rocks and steam.

Etna is one of two volcanoes in Italy considered "decade volcanoes" because of how frequently they can erupt.

This latest phase of activity at Europe's highest volcano follows the first eruption in more than a year at the end of February.

The BBC reporter said a volcanologist at the scene told her it was the most unsafe incident he had experienced in his 30-year-career.

Rebecca Morelle, the BBC's science correspondent wrote on Twitter: "BBC team all ok - some cuts/ bruises and burns".
