Train strikes hit Monday commute

Train strikes hit Monday commute

Northern rail staff are set to go on strike tomorrow - affecting train services across Derbyshire.

Passenger services director Angie Doll said: 'We've shown that we can now run nearly all our services during an RMT strike.

Strikes over driver only operation of trains have spread to the north of England with RMT union members walking out on Merseyrail and Northern Rail today, as well as a further one-day strike on Southern.

Newcastle to Carlisle which calls at stations including Dunston, MetroCentre, Corbridge, Hecham, Haltwhistle and Carlisle.

Commuter Jack Crowley, 36, Bootle told JMU Journalism: "I don't get the train to and from work, but as I finish at about 8 o'clock tonight, I can imagine this will mean a lot more traffic on the roads which will be a bit of a hassle for me".

Up to 2,000 workers at three rail companies are on strike in separate disputes over staffing, causing travel misery for passengers. "It is now down to the company to ‎get that pledge back on the table and engage with the union in talks over a safe and sustainable future built around the guarantee of a guard on the trains".

More than half of services on Merseyrail and Arriva will be cancelled, while Southern said it aimed to run most of its 2,200 trains.

Martellus Bennett says goodbye to Patriots — NFL free agency
The most expensive cap hit is $8.4 million in 2019, which is less than Bennett is now seeking per year on the free agent market. It can be expected that there will be more as the new league year progress, even though they already have a loaded roster.

Passengers at Southern are also facing yet another strike today - the 30th since the dispute over conductors' roles flared there nearly a year ago.

A spokesman for Northern said: "As our modernisation proposals are still in the early stages, it is a shame the RMT has announced strike action".

However, Darren Island, RMT Regional Organiser, told JMU Journalism: "We just want employers to see sense".

Northern Rail have issued a revised timetable and Transdev are running more buses on the 36 service to Leeds.

But RMT has hit back at operators by confirming that the unions were standing strong and holding pickets across the country to make their message to rail bosses and the public clear.

General secretary Mick Cash said: "It is obviously the case that if a disabled passenger once had the guarantee of a guard on their service and that guarantee is withdrawn then the disabled passenger has been disadvantaged".
