Abbas to Greenblatt: Peace deal is possible

U.S. President Donald Trump's Middle East envoy met on Tuesday (March 14) with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas as the new administration tries to restart peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians.

But it comes after Trump cast uncertainty over years of worldwide efforts to foster a two-state solution to the conflict when he met Netanyahu at the White House last month.

"President Abbas & I discussed how to make progress toward peace, building capacity of Palestinian security forces & stopping incitement", Greenblatt tweeted after the meeting.

The American consulate announcement also stated that during the meeting Abbas and Greenblatt expressed a commitment by the United States and the PA to advance a real, sustainable peace between Israel and the Palestinians. Since his inauguration on January 20, Trump has been ambivalent about a two-state solution, the mainstay of USA policy in the region for the past two decades. "I can live with either one", Trump told a February 15 news conference during a visit to Washington by Netanyahu, causing consternation across the Arab world and in many European capitals.

The release also states the reasoning behind this move, claiming that it is an exercise to "reduce overall H-1B processing times". The lobby group, however, added that the move would not be a "significant impediment" for the $110-billion outsourcing industry.

"President Abbas told Mr. Greenblatt that under President Trump's leadership a historic peace deal is possible, and that it will enhance security throughout the region", the statement said. "I'm looking at a two-state and one-state, and I like the one that both parties like", Trump said.

Greenblatt, making his first trip to the Middle East as Trump's special representative for worldwide negotiations, has been charged with determining whether tangible progress can be made toward peace between Israelis and Palestinians despite decades of failed talks punctuated by outbursts of warfare.

According to a statement from the Israeli Prime Minister's office, Netanyahu and Greenblatt re-established Israel and the US's joint dedication in promoting a true and lasting peace between Israel and the Palestinians that strengthens stability within the Middle East and Israel's security.

A USA statement says Greenblatt told Netanyahu that Trump hopes to work out an approach to settlement building that is consistent with the US goal of reaching a peace deal.
