South Korean president ousted following her impeachment

South Korean president ousted following her impeachment

The political fate of South Korea's scandal-hit President Park Geun-Hye will be decided by the country's highest court Friday, a spokesman said, when it will rule on whether to confirm her impeachment. Lee Jae-yong, the de facto head of the country's biggest conglomerate, Samsung, is also involved and is on trial accused of bribery and embezzlement.

Two protesters were killed during violent clashes with police after a South Korean Court removed President Park Geun-hye from office. But the chaebols, which fuelled Korea's development under Ms Park's dictator father, have also amassed far too much power and are holding their country back.

RT asked Viktor Goa, Director of the China National Association of International Studies, whether public opinion is divided since mass protests were calling for the resignation of the former President, and a lot of people turned out to support her. It was an unusually quick response from the rogue nation, which typically waits days to report global news, according to Reuters.

"The president's violations clearly have betrayed the public trust, which can not be tolerated in the constitutional context", Lee said.

Acting Chief Justice Lee Jung-mi said, "Such actions went against the Constitution, Public Employees Law and Public Ethics Code as well as undermined the representative democracy system and judiciary foundation of this nation".

A likely candidate is liberal Moon Jae-In, who lost to Ms Park in 2012 but now leads the polls.

Ash Wednesday drive-through is a hit, in Ireland
One Wednesday every winter, it's not unusual to see people walking around with a black mark smeared on their foreheads. The 40 days period is treated as a time where people dedicate their faith in fasting from festivities and food.

It's believed the deaths occured as hundreds of people tried to storm the courthouse where Park's impeachment was upheld.

At the heart of the drama lies the close friendship between the president and Ms Choi.

The court said Park had "completely hidden the fact of (Choi's) interference with state affairs".

The rival demonstrations were held outside the court, with two of Park royalists passing away after being taken to a nearby hospital.

But the judges dismissed some charges, including accusations Ms Park had infringed on freedom of the press by creating a media blacklist of cultural figures, and criticism of her response during the 2014 Sewol ferry disaster.

29 Nov, 2016: In her third televised apology, Ms Park asks Parliament to decide how and when she can give up power over the scandal. The benchmark KOSPI index has gained 4.6 percent in dollar terms since Park's impeachment on December 9, outpacing Japan's Nikkei 225, while the won has been among Asia's top performers in that time. She is stripped of powers while awaiting a court decision on the vote. According to an aide who spoke to reporters outside the court, Park is planning on staying at the presidential residence known as the Blue House on Friday despite her removal from office, but wouldn't be issuing a statement.
