Turkish Military Chief Meets with Russian, US Counterparts

Turkey, the United States and Russian Federation must coordinate fully to clear Syria of terrorist groups and the three countries' chiefs of staff were working to prevent clashes between the different parties in the country, Turkey's prime minister said.

Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim told a news conference that more coordination among the three is needed.

Manbij was captured from Islamic State a year ago by an alliance of USA -backed militias including the Kurdish YPG, which Ankara views as a threat to its national security because of its links to the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). Then, right next door are US -backed Kurdish and Arab coalition forces. "This is the main objective of the meeting that will continue today and tomorrow", Yildirim said, according to Turkey's Hurriyet newspaper.

U.S. -backed Syrian forces said on Thursday they were closing in on Islamic State-held Raqqa and expected to reach the city outskirts in a few weeks, as a U.S. Marines artillery unit deployed to help the campaign.

"It makes no sense to launch an operation in Manbij without the cooperation of Russian Federation and the United States", Yildirim said Monday.

Turkey also launched its incursion into Syria in August 2016 in an alleged bid to push Daesh from Turkey's border with Syria and stop the advance of Kurdish forces.

The Manbij Military Council, an SDF component that controls Manbij, had earlier posted a photo claiming to depict the missile system being prepared.

Cavusoglu gave no deadline for any withdrawal of the YPG militia, seen by Ankara as a hostile force allied to PKK Kurdish militants fighting an insurgency on Turkish soil.

"Turkey has no national interest nor any legal ground in attacking Manbij", Haldun Solmazturk, chairman of Incek debates with Ankara-based 21st Century Turkey Institute, told Xinhua. The Syrian government, with its military being greatly weakened by years of fighting, could settle for a federal Syria to maintain the country's territorial integrity given the USA support and Russian tolerance of the YPG.

In a thinly veiled criticism of Washington, the Turkish premier on Tuesday lashed out at "some allies' unfortunate" choice of Syrian Kurdish militia forces as partners in the fight against IS. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's spokesman Ibrahim Kalin said the YPG should move out of Manbij to the eastern side of the Euphrates River.

Regional security, notably in northern Syria, is top of the agenda. They are in addition to an undisclosed number of USA special operations troops who have been working inside Manbij for months to help a local coalition, known as the Manbij Military Council, to hold the city and restore governance.

The standoff has emerged as Russian Federation has taken the diplomatic lead in seeking to resolve the war in Syria after its air campaign that started in 2015 succeeded in bolstering President Bashar al-Assad.
