49ers to release Torrey Smith

49ers to release Torrey Smith

In 2015, the year he signed a five-year contract that had a maximum value of $40 million, Smith had 33 catches for 663 yards, averaging 20.1 yards per catch with four touchdowns. He finished his collegiate career ranked third in school history with 152 receptions and second with 2,215 yards, while adding 19 touchdowns in three seasons. He played collegiate football at the University of Maryland and was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the 2011 NFL Draft.

Wherever Smith finds himself, that team is getting a victor on and especially off the field.

Over the weekend, the 49ers elected to re-sign Kerley and followed it up by cutting ties with the former Terp. He's unlikely to draw another big deal after two bad seasons.

On Monday, he reported the San Francisco 49ers had released veteran wideout Torrey Smith, even citing a source in his tweet. New San Francisco coach Kyle Shanahan and new general manager John Lynch obviously didn't see the speedy Smith as a fit in their new offensive scheme.

Smith complimented the organization and his teammates, stressing that he's not "super salty" and doesn't hate the 49ers.

Back in Baltimore, Smith talked to CSN Mid-Atlantic and said he liked the people in San Francisco but hated the overall experience, in which the 49ers went 7-25 and he totaled just 53 catches for 930 yards in two years. Along with his TV work, Smith Sr. seems keen on also breaking free agent news on Twitter.
