Martin Scorsese's 'The Irishman' Heads to Netflix From Paramount

Martin Scorsese's 'The Irishman' Heads to Netflix From Paramount

In Cannes, STX prevailed in a heated bidding war to pick up the film's foreign rights for $50 million, with Paramount attached to handle the domestic distribution.

The movie, which was first announced in 2008, is an adaptation of Charles Brandt's book I Heard You Paint Houses about mob hitman Frank "The Irishman" Sheeran's life. Martin Scorsese directing Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci?

IndieWire reported last night that Netflix had acquired the film, which was originally supposed to be distributed domestically by Paramount and internationally by STX.

The film's potential $100 million budget comes with possible risks.

Although it's unusual that a movie like The Irishman wouldn't find immediate funding - especially with a director like Scorsese attached to the project - the bigger takeaway is that a company like Netflix is setting itself up to be the go-to company for independent, potentially award-winning films. While DeNiro and Pesci have worked together numerous times on Scorsese projects, the only time DeNiro and Pacino shared the big screen was in Michael Mann's 1995 heist movie Heat. Now the streaming giant has swooped in and will release the film to its 94 million subscribers around the world.

Mnuchin says goal is to pass tax reform by August
However, experts believe that this is unrealistic considering the fact that lawmakers already have a complex agenda to deal with. The tax plan of Republican House leaders includes the border adjustment tax, which could be a major source of tax revenue.

"I'm anxious about double-think or triple-think, which is [when studios] make you believe you have the freedom, but they can make it very hard to get the picture shown, to get it made, [and] ruin reputations", he told the Associated Press.

As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be on Netflix. This way, he can make the project he wants, ' said the source. It will include a limited Oscar-qualifying theatrical release.

Netflix has become known over the past few years for the autonomy they give their talent, something that people like "Orange Is the New Black" creator Jenji Kohan and more recently Brit Marling of "The OA" have raved about in interviews. Several major theaters have boycotted Netflix's strategy, maintaining that it depresses turnout if viewers can watch a new release online in the comfort of their own homes, rather than spend money to see it at a theater.

Netflix hopes Scorsese's film will do the same.

No other details have been given about the film at the time and Netflix would not comment on their purchase.
