First LTE-U Devices Get Approved by the FCC

More areas of the country are likely to see gigabit LTE, say carriers, as the FCC has approved the use of the 5GHz spectrum for mobile data.

After a controversial process created to make sure that use of the 5GHz band on cellular networks won't interfere with Wi-Fi networks, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) authorized on Wednesday, Feb. 22, the first LTE for unlicensed spectrum (LTE-U) devices. These devices and Wi-Fi operations can co-exist in the 5GHz band, as has been demonstrated by voluntary industry testing.

Verizon announced Wednesday that it will launch 5G commercial services in 11 select US markets.

Back in 2015, LTE-U deployment plans have been opposed by the Wi-Fi Alliance and cable companies. T-Mobile just announced its plans to deploy LTE-U technology starting this spring, which means customers will have access to additional LTE capacity. It also promises to give way to Wi-Fi as the need arises.

The FCC's notice on Wednesday said the newly authorized devices (from network equipment makers Ericsson and Nokia) did comply with the coexistence plan, but that doing so isn't a requirement. This heralds a technical breakthrough in the many shared uses of this spectrum. Hardware manufacturers like Qualcomm, Nokia and Ericsson are already onboard, and it's expected that others will join the race to fill the gap between LTE and 5G.

Doan then took a taxi to Sky Star Hotel in Salak Tinggi, reaching it in about 10 minutes, and went up to Room 209. A source close to the Malaysian prime minister's office said police were still waiting for an autopsy.

"Ericsson welcomes the FCC's approval of LTE-U", commented Glenn Laxdal, Head of Network Products, Ericsson North America. Both companies had their equipment certified by the FCC on February 2. It will, however, accomplish this by utilizing the rather controversial LTE-U spectrum that has divided the tech community for quite some time.

"LTE-U devices and equipment intelligently tap into and share underutilized unlicensed spectrum without affecting other users on the same band, including those using conventional Wi-Fi".

Cellular carriers in the U.S. generally hold exclusive licenses to spectrum, while Wi-Fi operates in unlicensed frequencies.

The Un-carrier has actually been testing LTE-U equipment since late previous year, but now that the FCC has agreed that LTE-U can work in tandem with Wi-Fi technologies, the floodgates have been opened.
