Disney Research Made a Room That Will Wirelessly Charge Any Phone

They've developed a way of broadcasting energy in a room, to the point that you simply carry a device into the room and it'll start charging. And its latest invention is a technology that wirelessly powers any device.

An experimental demonstration showed that in a 16×16x7.5-ft room with a floor, ceiling and walls made of painted aluminum sheet metal, the QSCR could deliver power to small coil receivers in almost any position with 40% to 95% efficiency.

A signal generator located outside the room produces a 1.32 MHz tone, which is given a boost by a power amplifier. Per the location of the object in the room, researchers estimated the efficiency level to be between 40 and 95 percent. Also, the circular nature of the magnetic field produced means receivers only work when at right angles to it, although this can be solved with three coils pointing in different directions. This comes from Gizmodo, which reports that the researchers published a paper in the Plos One journal describing their plan and how it works. A receiving coil will also be connected to the pipe, resonating at the same frequency as the capacitors to power your devices.

Disney Research takes us another step toward the day when we'll no longer have to think about charging our devices.

Wireless charging is a farce.

Amid protests, United Kingdom lawmakers to debate Trump visit invitation
In London, more than 16,000 people have indicated on Facebook that they will join a Stop Trump march to Parliament Square. The Houses of Parliament in London on Sunday became the backdrop for a large projection reading "Say No to Trump".

Their method, called quasistatic cavity resonance, has the potential to make wireless electrical power as ubiquitous as Wi-Fi.

Next the team induced electrical currents throughout the walls, floors and ceilings sending magnetic waves throughout the room, which allowed devices operating at the same frequency to receive power. Instead, you just need to enter a room and your worries of having a dead phone are no more. The 1900 watts of power is still within the Federal Guidelines for Specific absorption Rate (SAR) or the measure of energy that can safely be absorbed by the human body and anything higher can be deemed risky. The devices will require additional hardware, as seen in the video above, in order to take advantage of the wireless technology.

The technology is still in its early stages, and researchers have warned of a few safety issues. For larger amounts, standard methods such as real-time power tracking can be used to ensure safe operation.

Tucked away within the Disney Research headquarters in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, there is a small metallic room with some seemingly magical capabilities.
