Flows of major weapons 'highest since Cold War'

The volume of global major weapons transfers has been growing continuously since 2004, according to new data from the Stockholm worldwide Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).

"While China is increasingly able to substitute arms imports with indigenous products, India remains dependent on weapons technology from many willing suppliers, including Russian Federation, the United States, European states, Israel and South Korea".

Europe's global imports were down by a third as a result of defense cuts, making up 11 percent.

"While China is increasingly able to substitute arms imports with indigenous products, India remains dependent on weapons technology from many willing suppliers, including Russian Federation, the USA, European states, Israel and South Korea", said Siemon Wezeman, senior researcher at Sipri's arms and military expenditure programme.

India received 68 percent of its arms from Russian Federation, five times the amount it bought from the United States, according to the report. Arms imports by Qatar went up by 245 per cent.

India was the world's largest importer of major arms in 2012-16, accounting for 13 percent of the global total - far greater than regional rivals China and Pakistan, SIPRI reported.

The region of Asia and Oceania accounted for 43 percent of all imports in the period.

South Korea´s national news agency Yonhap quoted a Seoul government source as saying Kim Jong-Nam was killed on Monday. Fadzil said an ambulance picked up Jong-Nam from the airport. "Loyalists may have wanted to get rid of him", he said.

Saudi Arabia was the second largest arms importer in 2012-16, with an increase of 212 per cent compared with 2007-11.

Transfers of major arms - which include missiles, warplanes, submarines and air defence systems - were at their highest volume past year since 1990, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).

SIPRI data reflects the volume of deliveries of arms, not the financial value of the deals. In terms of buying weapons, India is now the largest importer. "Over the past five years, most states in the Middle East have turned primarily to the US and Europe in their accelerated pursuit of advanced military capabilities", said Pieter Wezeman, Senior Researcher with the SIPRI Arms and Military Expenditure Programme.

The Middle East, where demand grew by 86% between 2007 to 2011 and 2012 to 2016 to reach 29% of all imports, gets most of its destructive technology from the United States and France. The US sold military equipment and weapons to 100 countries.

However the agency's three to five year economic forecast of its foreign weapons sales did sync up with Monday's SIPRI report. Nearly half of its arms went to the Middle East.

Russian Federation accounts for a 23% share of global exports, while China's share rose from 3.8% to 6.2%. China in particular increased its exports by more than 70% over the previous five years, while both France and Germany saw their exports decline significantly.
