Amid protests, United Kingdom lawmakers to debate Trump visit invitation

The debate, hosted in a packed side room of parliament rather than the main debating chamber, gave lawmakers a platform to air their views on Trump.

British MPs are debating whether US President Donald Trump should receive a state reception in the UK.

In London, more than 16,000 people have indicated on Facebook that they will join a Stop Trump march to Parliament Square.

The main protest is scheduled to take place in Parliament Square, London with demonstrations also set to take place in Edinburgh, Manchester, Liverpool, Newcastle and Cardiff.

The Stop Trump coalition had called for a nationwide day of action in addition to dozens of protests coordinated by the One Day Without Us movement celebrating the contribution of immigrants to British society.

More than 1.85 million people called for the visit later this year to be watered down to avoid causing "embarrassment" to the Queen.

An alternative petition, backed by almost 312,000 people, demanding the state visit goes ahead will also be considered.

'The visit should happen, the visit will happen and when it does I trust the United Kingdom will extend a polite and generous welcome to president Donald Trump'.

Trump in new attack on 'dishonest media'
Huber said he was at the president's side for probably less than five minutes, but it's five minutes he said he'll never forget. After Melania Trump recited the "Our Father" and said a few words, Donald Trump opened his rally with an attack on the media.

Green Party co-leader Caroline Lucas and comedian Shappi Khorsandi are among those scheduled to address the rally, along with union representatives, environmentalists and speakers from Islamic organisations and human rights groups.

"We didn't do this for Kennedy, we didn't do this for Truman, we didn't do this for Reagan, but for this man. we say, 'Please come and we will lay on everything, because we are so desperate for your company, '" he said.

"As an example of fawning subservience, the prime minister holding hands [with Trump] would be hard to match", the former Scottish first minister said.

The Houses of Parliament in London on Sunday became the backdrop for a large projection reading "Say No to Trump". Journalist and anti-Trump activist Owen Jones predicted that it could draw the "biggest protest in British history", The Independent reports. The petition supporting Trump's visit got 311,000 signatures.

Outside, one of protesters, Melanie Lloyd, told Sky News: "I love America".

"They are concerned about a President who has welcomed white supremacists ... into his close inner circle", he added.

Mr Khan said the executive-ordered travel ban aimed at people from seven Muslim-majority countries, which has stalled in the U.S. courts, and the suspension of refugee admissions were reasons not to be "rolling out the red carpet".

If Trump's trip was downgraded to an "official visit", the President would be deprived of a ride in the Queen's carriage, gun salutes, a banquet at Buckingham Palace and other ceremonial honors typically associated with full state visits.
