ODI series preview: NZ v South Africa

ODI series preview: NZ v South Africa

Hosts New Zealand get set for their final home series of the season, as they take on the mighty visiting South Africans in the one-off Twenty20 worldwide (T20I), at the Eden Park Stadium in Auckland on Friday.

The two sides will travel to Hamilton today, with the first one-day worldwide at Seddon Park tomorrow.

Du Plessis, with 36, A.B.de Villiers with 26 and Duminy with 29 provided support as South Africa achieved a competitive total.

With danger man Martin Guptill injured and Ross Taylor controversially omitted from the T20 side, the Black Caps' woes with the bat were apparent.

Tahir says the weather is forcing the players to have a bit of a rest: "We want to play, but obviously it's nice to have one or two days off".

Amidst the off-field rancour and controversy of the 1981 Springboks tour of New Zealand, Wynand Claassen led his side to a 25-22 defeat at the ground.

Left arm swing bowler Trent Boult produced terrific figures of 4-0-8-2, extra lustre being added by the fact South Africa got 169 runs off the other 16 overs. I thought we played an outstanding game of cricket.

Tahir showed why he is the best Twenty20 bowler in global cricket as he tore apart the New Zealand innings.

The 37-year-old was able to build on a superb performance by opening bowler Chris Morris, who was also denied a hat-trick on his way to figures of 2-10 in his initial three-over spell.

Imran Tahir picked up his first five-for in T20 global cricket and was justly awarded the man of the match.

"It's a very special feeling", Tahir said after his man-of-the-match performance at Eden Park, only the third five-wicket haul by a South African in a T20 global. No one conceded less than 14 runs previously. We're coming off a series and have been playing good cricket.

Paceman Lasith Malinga, playing his first global match in 12 months, was the pick of the Sri Lankan bowlers, claiming two wickets in two balls while also taking a couple of catches on his return.

After losing the toss, South Africa made a flying start with the bat then backed it up with a strong bowling performance.

Sri Lanka skipper Upul Tharanga fell for a duck but Dilshan Munaweera (44) and Niroshan Dickewalla (30) steadied the innings before Asela Gunaratne (52) hit his maiden fifty to take the tourists close to win.
