Trump's trash talk on judges makes trouble for Gorsuch

"I really think the president has a right to make a temporary decision like this as commander in chief and someone who has to protect the country", he said.

Senator Richard Blumenthal said on Wednesday that Gorsuch had told him that Trump's comments about the judiciary, which have included calling the judge who blocked his travel ban a "so-called judge", were "disheartening and demoralizing".

The truth is we don't know. On Thursday Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer of NY upped the ante by demanding that Gorsuch go public with his criticism of Trump: "To whisper to a senator but to refuse to say anything public is not close to good enough to show an independence", Schumer said.

White House spokesman Sean Spicer, at a briefing with reporters, defended Trump and said Gorsuch had not been commenting specifically about the president's attacks on the judiciary.

Trump attempted to raise seven-year-old allegations that Blumenthal misrepresented his service during the Vietnam war. Judge Gorsuch's spokeswoman confirmed he had made the remarks as did Kelly Ayotte, a Republican former senator from New Hampshire who was at the meeting. Mr. Trump is trying to cover his own mistakes by criticizing others, shifting the focus of his own actions onto others through personal invective and attack.

The nominee - who was picked by Mr Trump during a livestreamed event - "didn't disagree" that the President could be held in contempt of court for his repeated attacks on the judiciary, said Mr Blumenthal.

The report shows the USA government has begun seeking waivers to address environmental laws on building in some areas. That's nearly twice as much as the $12 billion price tag Trump touted during his presidential campaign.

Neil Gorsuch's nomination was announced by President Trump on January 31st, when Gorsuch was a sitting judge on the 10th circuit of the U.S. Court of Appeals. "There were numerous White House staffers in the room, and he's made the same comment, as you just heard, to a number of my colleagues in their private conversation".

In an interview with CNN, Blumenthal said he told Gorsuch that he found Trump's attacks on the judiciary unacceptable and asked the judge to condemn them.

Judge Neil Gorsuch... who might remain Judge Neil Gorsuch at this rate. The following day, I sent a letter to Senate leaders along with the Attorneys General of 19 other states to express strong support for Judge Gorsuch and urge the Senate to confirm him without delay.

The president has repeatedly said people are "pouring in" since the ban was put on hold and suggested that blocking the order would be risky for us citizens.

On Saturday, Trump called Robart a "so-called judge" whose "ridiculous" ruling "essentially takes law-enforcement away from our country". Four of those vacancies are on the 9th Circuit, the court that ruled on Thursday to uphold the restraining order blocking Trump's executive order on immigration. But most Senate Democrats are lining up to oppose Mr Gorsuch's nomination and may even stage a rare filibuster to complicate his path to the bench of America's highest court.

Robert Weissman, president of the liberal watchdog group Public Citizen, said Trump's reaction over his daughter's business line contradicted his pre-inauguration claim that "he is going to have nothing to do with his family businesses".
