Protesters Block Betsy DeVos From First Visit to Public School

DeVos, who was a controversial pick from Donald Trump, was physically blocked from entering Jefferson Middle School, with several parents holding banners standing in her way as she attempted to enter.

Another protester accused her of buying her nomination, saying, "She's giving money to senators and buying your way to position".

The police department tweeted one man had been arrested for assaulting a police officer at the protest at Jefferson Middle School Academy.

Randy Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, one of the groups that vigorously opposed Ms DeVos' nomination, condemned Friday morning's incident. After DeVos was elected in a historic vote requiring a tie-breaker by Vice President Mike Pence, there has been some discontent in the activist community, according to the New York Times.

"Betsy DeVos does not represent our students or our families here in D.C.", the teacher told The Washington Post. As identity politics and critical theory have spread from the universities downward into high schools and beyond, the party line in education has grown more progressive but increasingly illiberal. DeVos and her family have donated millions to the Republican Party since 1982, and almost a million dollars to 21 current Republican senators.

United States stocks hit records as Trump signals action on tax cuts
Trump called his tax plan as "phenomenal", but offered no details other than citing the need to lower tax burden on businesses. Gold sank 1.19 per cent on a firmer dollar and as the latest bullish U.S. economic data fuelled rate hike expectations.

Mother Jones notes that DeVos once advocated to "retire" and "replace" Detroit's public school system, while promoting charter schools (including private and Christian schools). Yet some critics (in this case, meaning people who typed words into Twitter) are questioning why DeVos' opponents, who are so vocal about her lack of experience inside schools, would think it's the right course of action to actively keep her out of one.

DeVos eventually made it inside the school, in a visit that was created to help her mend fences with teachers and parents across the country.

"There is a tremendous feeling for public education in this country, including in rural districts, including in red states, and anything that might undercut resources for our public schools is going to meet with a lot of opposition", he said. "Please let her in". The event was closed to the media.

Eastern Pennsylvania resident Shae Ashe made a decision to run for a spot on his local school board in direct response to DeVos' ascension to her new role.
