Supreme court nominee calls Trump tweet about judiciary 'demoralizing'

Donald Trump has questioned the credibility of a Democratic senator after he relayed comments by the U.S. president's Supreme Court nominee, Neil Gorsuch, expressing concern over recent attacks on the federal judiciary.

Mr Trump has previously threatened to destroy the career of a Senator who did not agree with him, and he fired former acting attorney general Sally Yates for refusing to defend his Muslim ban in court.

Blumenthal's characterization of Gorsuch's comments were confirmed by spokesman Ron Bonjean, who's helping handle media relations for the Supreme Court nominee.

This story is breaking and will be updated. The president has railed against a federal judge who temporarily blocked his immigration executive order.

Mr Trump defended his immigration executive order as necessary for the nation's security, in a speech to law enforcement officers in which he criticised USA courts as being "political".

He also complained that some courts were "so political".

Israel passes bill to seize private Palestinian land for Jewish settlements
Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman said last week: "The chance that it will be struck down by the Supreme Court is 100 percent". But critics say the measure is illegal and would make peace with the Palestinians even more hard .

Trump's tweet now sets up Gorsuch to have to come down on one side or the other if the SCOTUS nominee is asked about the remarks in public. "Bad people are very happy!" he tweeted.

The New York Times said Gorsuch "privately expressed dismay on Wednesday over Mr. Trump's increasingly aggressive attacks on the judiciary, calling the president's criticism of independent judges "demoralizing" and 'disheartening'". "If something happens blame him and court system", another stated. Instead, he is accusing Blumenthal of misrepresenting his conversation with the Supreme Court nominee, and he is blasting CNN for not asking the Senator "about his long-term lie about his "brave" service in Vietnam".

Gorsuch told [Democratic Senate Minority Leader] Schumer in a meeting Tuesday that an attack on his fellow judges is an attack on all, and he said he is incredibly disheartened when people attack his fellow judges, according to a source familiar with the discussion who paraphrased the judge's comments.

The Denver-based appellate judge continued to traverse the corridors of the Senate office buildings across from the Capitol on Thursday, paying courtesy calls to senators while ignoring reporters' questions. He needs to make that statement publicly and condemn this attack on the independence of the judiciary and show the American people that he will be independent.

Trump's post was among numerous tweets pushing back on the decision Friday by Robart in Seattle, Washington, and voicing concern over the subsequent legal battle. Ben Sasse of Nebraska said a day later that the judge had also defended the judiciary to him.

"Frankly, it seems to me that [Gorsuch's criticism of Trump] is a good reason why his nomination shouldn't be politicized", Sasse said on MSNBC's "Morning Joe." With the White House hunting for eight Democratic votes to get Gorsuch across a confirmation hurdle in the Senate, Democrats accused the judge of participating in a White House "ruse" to pretend to be independent from the president by claiming to be demoralized by his attacks on the judiciary.
