In the Asian region, Hong Kong's Hang Seng was up 0.21 per cent, while Shanghai Composite Index was up 0.38 per cent in early trade today.

The 30-share barometer opened a shade higher and rose further before profit-booking kicked in, but settled at 28,335.16, a loss of 104.12 points, or 0.37 per cent.

The Sensex touched a high of 28,456.18 points and a low of 28,286.80 points during the intra-day trade.

Indian markets witnessed very volatile trading session on the last day of the week However, the markets ended on a positive note, Nifty was not able to hold the level of 8800.

The BSE market breadth was tilted in favour of the bears - with 1,551 declines and 1,307 advances.

The broader NSE Nifty rose 0.17 percent to 8,793.55, while the benchmark BSE Sensex closed up 0.02 percent at 28,334.25.

The IT sub-index of NSE surged 2.16 per cent led by gains in TCS, Tech Mahindra and Infosys, which closed with over 2 per cent gains each.
