Sam Shields released by Packers after series of concussions

The Green Bay Packers released cornerback Sam Shields on Wednesday after the seven-year veteran spent almost the entire 2016 season in the NFL's concussion protocol.

Shields was one of the highest paid players on the team, and had one season remaining on the four-year, $39 million contract he signed in 2014.

Shields suffered a concussion in the 2016 regular season opener in Jacksonville and didn't play the rest of the season.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy, in his season-ending press conference a few days later, hinted that the team was more concerned about Shields' personal welfare than his return to the football field.

Shields was placed on injured reserve last October after suffering a concussion.

"I understand why you ask that", Shields said. Over the past two years, he has played in just two of a possible 23 games, including the playoffs. The release of Shields was announced on Wednesday.

Man arrested in strangling death of NYC jogger
Thursday marked six months since the day Ms Vetrano had been out jogging in black shorts and a sports top when she was attacked. When Vetrano failed to return home, her father, a retired firefighter, went looking for her with the help of police.

Starks isn't going to have anyone scrambling for the phone, but he should get some interest.

If Shields decides to try continuing his career, he would have to clear concussion protocol during a physical with whatever team takes a gamble on the corner. "But right now it's just day by day". That gives the team nearly $43 million of cap space, based on OverTheCap.com's projection of a $168 million salary cap for 2017.

The Packers are reportedly parting ways with cornerback Sam Shields. "That's the primary focus".

By releasing him, the Packers save more than $9.5 million on the cap next season.

He was released with a non-football injury designation, but according to Ian Rapoport, he will be healthy going forward.

The 30-year played in 76 games for the Packers, rushing for 2,506 yards and nine touchdowns on 618 carries.
