Trump administration puts Iran 'on notice' after missile test

U.S. National Security Adviser Michael Flynn told reporters that the Trump administration is putting Iran is "on notice" after a ballistic missile launch the White House considers a provocation.

Speaking publicly for the first time since Donald Trump became USA president, his national security adviser, retired General Michael Flynn, said the White House was putting Iran "on notice", and vowed to act decisively in response.

Oil advanced in the wake of Flynn's comments, with the cost of a barrel rising 1.7 percent to $53.70 at 2:21 p.m. EST.

Flynn said Iran had been "emboldened" by "weak and effective" United Nations and former President Barack Obama's administration policies, including agreements such as the 2015 deal created to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon.

The missile testing combined with the Houthi attack, "underscore what should have been clear to the worldwide community all along about Iran's destabilizing behavior across the Middle East", Flynn said. However, a United Nations resolution approved days after the Iran deal was meant to address this oversight by limiting Iran's ballistic missile tests for 8 years.

President Donald Trump's national security staff is promising a tougher line against Iran following its ballistic missile test, while simultaneously making it clear that Iran is complying with a nuclear deal that Trump roundly criticized during his campaign. Following the Tuesday session, Nikki Haley, the new USA ambassador to the United Nations, said the world should be "alarmed" by the test and called for unspecified U.N. action. The new resolution states "Iran is called upon not to undertake any activity related to ballistic missiles created to be capable of delivering nuclear weapons, including launches using such ballistic missile technology".

"Iranian aggression must not go unanswered", Netanyahu wrote on Monday.

Iran's Defense Minister Hossein Dehghan (L), Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif (2nd from R) and Ali Akbar Salehi (R), the head of Iran's Atomic Energy Organization, pose for pictures after receiving the Medal of Honor from President Hassan Rouhani (2nd from L) for their role in the implementation of a nuclear deal with world powers, on February 8, 2016, in Tehran.

Iran has repeatedly maintained that missile development is within its rights to self-defense against attack from Israel, its longtime regional adversary.

Trump, as a presidential candidate, was deeply critical of the landmark 2015 nuclear deal with Iran, calling it "the worst deal ever negotiated".

This only "called upon" Iran not to test-fire missiles that could be used to deliver nuclear weapons. Trump spoke Sunday with King Salman of Saudi Arabia and the two reportedly, "agreed on the importance of rigorously enforcing the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action with Iran", aka the Iran deal.

"When actions are taken that violate or are inconsistent with the resolution, we will act to hold Iran accountable and urge other countries to do so as well", Toner said. "This support risks expanding and intensifying the conflict in Yemen, which is not good for the people of the area, creates further instability, risks greater violence and will lead to unending conflict".

"There are a large number of options available to the administration", he said. We are not going to stand by.

Haley said Tuesday: "What we need [Iran] to know is that Security Council Resolution 2231 means something".
