UC Berkeley's Violent Protest Is A Lesson In Free Speech And Privilege

Protesters threw fireworks and smoke bombs, and started a small fire on the campus.

The UC system receives more than $2 billion in federal research funding and another $1.6 billion in federal aid for students, according to its 2015-16 budget summary.

The university opted to cancel [Milo] Yiannopoulos's speech roughly two hours before it was set to begin after a protest against his presence on the campus turned violent, CNN reported.

The violent protests were sparked after Breitbart editor Milo Yiannopoulos attempted to hold a scheduled speech at the college.

Violent protests near U.C. Berkeley Wednesday night led to the cancellation of a Milo Yiannopoulos talk.

BART officials temporarily halted train service at the downtown Berkeley station due to civil disturbance in the area.

Berkeley administrators expressed regret at having to cancel the speech - the university was the birth place of the free speech movement - but cited concerns about public safety as forcing their hand.

Vladimir Putin summons top advisors ahead of call with Donald Trump
McCain added that it would be "naive and dangerous" for Trump to think Putin isn't an enemy to the United States. It would be a tremendous asset. "If we can, that would be a positive, not a negative".

U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to revoke federal funding from the university early Thursday, suggesting, in a tweet, that the school itself was stifling free speech.

At least a half-dozen people were reportedly wounded as protestors set fires and threw objects at campus buildings Wednesday night. An estimated 500 people gathered, holding signs that say "Hate Speech Is Not Free Speech" and pledging to shut down the event.

The Martin Luther King Jr student union had already been heavily reinforced behind several layers of police barricades however violence escalated and the police placed the campus on lockdown, advising students to shelter in place or leave the area.

Shields stated on Twitter that he aided the defence of a man who was being attacked by masked protesters. He specified, however, that Yiannopoulos's opinions and rhetoric profoundly oppose the values championed by the university and described him as "a troll and provocateur who uses odious behavior in parts to "entertain", but also to deflect any serious engagement with ideas".

Dozens of extra police officers had been placed on duty and attempted various methods of crowd control, however they were unable to calm the demonstrations. A similar invitation to speak at UCLA was rescinded and Berkeley was to be the last stop of his tour.

Before the event, Chancellor Nicholas Dirks refused a request by many faculty members to cancel the event.
