North Korea faces 'overwhelming' United States response if it uses nuclear arms - Mattis

Meeting with Minister Han, the Pentagon chief defended the THAAD deployment which he described as defensive in nature because it only aims to protect South Korean people and US forces stationed here from DPRK threats.

"Right now we have to address the reality of the threat that your country and my country faces, and we intend to be shoulder-to-shoulder with you as we face this together", he said.

The Pentagon has said that it would not implement any major changes in its policy towards the region, or ask Japan and Korea to shoulder more of the costs for the deployment of United States troops in those countries.

"That could mean that the Trump administration would not only inherit the pivot to Asia [strategy] but would probably upgrade it", Zhou said.

He also praised South Korea - which has almost 30,000 United States troops stationed there - as a "lynchpin of peace and stability" in the Asia-Pacific region. Though Trump has yet to lay out his foreign policy strategy toward China, recent comments from the president and his staff suggest that the administration considers China a major threat to USA interests in Asia and around the world. He added that any use of nuclear weapons by North Korea would be met with a overwhelming response. Even after Lotte Group, South Korea's fifth largest conglomerate, held a meeting of board members on Friday, they stopped short of approving a plan to offer its golf course in Seongju, North Gyeongsang, in exchange for a plot of land in Namyangju, Gyeonggi, now owned by the military. If Pyongyang conducts the test, it could be an early challenge for the Trump administration.

In the meeting, the two sides agreed to deploy and operate the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) missile defense system in South Korea this year to counter the threat from the North, South Korea's Defense Ministry later said. Beijing and Moscow have argued that the system could undermine their security interests.

But not everyone welcomed the visit, which comes as South Korea is paralyzed politically. Its president, Park Geun-hye, had her duties suspended last month after impeachment over corruption allegations. She could be permanently removed from office this spring.

But China is not the only reason for Mattis' trip.

The Falcons will face the Patriots this Sunday in their second Super Bowl appearance in franchise history. Kyle Shanahan committed what could have proven to be an extremely costly turnover Monday night.

The MD networking will foster arms race given the relationship between ballistic missiles and anti-missile systems that can be likened to a fight between spears and shields. And a large group gathered in a central square Thursday to protest Mattis' arrival.

Nicknamed "Mad Dog" Mattis, the former Marine has commanded troops in both Afghanistan and Iraq. More protesters were expected Friday.

North Korea regularly threatens to destroy South Korea and its main ally the United States.

It will be Mattis' role, some have speculated, to ease worries about those statements.

He said any U.S.

Shortly after the election of President Donald Trump, the North said it would never give up its nukes. A task made more hard since Donald Trump pulled out of the Asia-Pacific trade deal, championed by Japan and hinted, during the election campaign, that Japan was benefiting from a U.S. security umbrella without paying its fair share.

China has strongly opposed the deployment of a United States anti-missile defence system in South Korea, hours after defence chiefs from Washington and Seoul announced that the system would be in place by this year.

Beijing also claims the Diaoyu islands, which are now under Japanese administration, called the Senkakus by Tokyo.
