Mobile ads and YouTube drive Alphabet revenues to $26bn in Q4

Mobile ads and YouTube drive Alphabet revenues to $26bn in Q4

Wall Street was expecting around $25 billion. Some analysts had predicted income of $9.64 per share, a new record for profit in a single quarter by the company. Alphabet bested that with revenue of just over $26 billion, up 22 percent over the same period previous year. On an adjusted basis, when taking out one-time gains and costs, earnings were $9.36 per share, which misses estimates of $9.64 per share.

At $26.1 billion, Alphabet's gross revenue was up 22 percent over the fourth quarter of 2015, and beat expectations.

Research company eMarketer estimates that Google is going to reach nearly $61 billion in revenue from search ads this year or almost 59% of the global search ad market.

The company's other revenue, which captures such businesses, climbed 62% to US$3.4bil (RM15.07bil).

Google's net revenue - excluding $4.85 billion in Q3 traffic acquisition costs (TAC), what it pays partner websites to carry ads - was $21.2 billion, topping views.

"This performance was led by mobile search and YouTube", Alphabet Chief Financial Officer Ruth Porat said in a statement.

"We had more than 350 launches powered by machine learning across areas like search, Maps, messaging and Google Play", he added.

Trump revives Dakota and Keystone XL pipeline projects
It is a project that would transport crude oil from North Dakota through South Dakota and Iowa to a shipping point in IL . They say the route beneath Lake Oahe puts the water source in jeopardy and would destroy sacred land.

Having a price of $832.15, Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOG) traded -0.42% lower on the day.

Alphabet stock was down about 2% at $814.80 in after-hours trading on Thursday. Google includes search, advertising, YouTube, Android, Chrome, and most of the other consumer-facing products that you use. Probably the most compelling theory comes from J.P. Morgan analyst Doug Anmuth (via Tech Trader Daily), who believes it's related to Google Fiber.

During Alphabet's earnings call and following on from the company's Q4 financial results, Google CEO, Sundar Pichai, stated that he is not anxious about how the development of the voice search and assistant market is playing out.

Although Alphabet has grand designs on changing the world with self-driving cars, cures for disease, internet balloons, and all sorts of other fantastical projects, for now those ambitions are mostly money pits.

On Alphabet's earnings call, Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, said, "2016 was a great year for Google and 2017 is shaping up to be even more exciting".

As always the core of Google's business, and thus Alphabet's revenue, is advertising.

Google also introduced a range of other hardware devices in recent months, including its own line of Wifi routers, an Amazon Echo competitor called Google Home and its first VR headset.
