Samsung's final word on the Note 7 disaster

Samsung's final word on the Note 7 disaster

Chief executive DJ Koh apologized to customers and in a statement said, "Today, more than ever, we are committed to earning the trust of our customers through innovation that redefines what is possible in safety, and as a gateway to unlimited possibilities and incredible new experiences".

Samsung convened a press conference in Seoul Monday morning to explain that faulty batteries were behind the fires, as suspected all along - as opposed to other defects in the design of its smartphone hardware or software.

The smartphones were in the headlines a year ago when their fires injured people, destroyed a auto and caused the evacuation of a Southwest Airlines flight.

For those who came in late, the Note 7 started melting and Samsung blamed its battery supplier.

"The lessons of this incident are deeply reflected in our culture and process", Koh told reporters at a press briefing.

Five months after releasing the doomed Galaxy Note 7 to much fanfare, Samsung revealed what caused its flagship device to go boom not once, but twice.

Samsung will now implement an eight-point battery safety check that includes X-ray imaging, random disassembly inspections, charge/discharge testing, and two weeks of continuous usage across a range of scenarios.

He faced tough criticism a year ago though for his stance on new lockout laws in Sydney, which saw protests across the city. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull thanked Mr Baird for his time in office, saying he "played a great innings".

US companies UL and Exponent also examined the batteries supplied by South Korea-based Samsung SDI and China-based Amperex Technology Ltd., or ATL.

Samsung said that 96 percent of about 3 million Galaxy Note7 phones "sold and activated" had been returned by users.

The report was compiled by Samsung and third-party researchers it hired to work on the investigation. However, Koh said Samsung and the outside inspectors found no evidence that the high energy density alone had made the phones prone to overheating. Would you purchase the Galaxy S8 or the new Note device? The cell-pouch design of the battery also did not have enough space to safely accommodate its electrodes - another flaw.

The Galaxy S8 will not be launched at Barcelona's Mobile World Congress but will instead debut later in the year, Samsung has confirmed. The first, based on Samsung's urge to overtake Apple to market, and the second due to pressure on the supplier to quickly turn around a massive order of replacement battery stock. The two models are rumoured to have 5.7in and 6.2in screens respectively, but Samsung has supposedly managed to achieve this without making the device footprint any larger than the S7's.

Another feature that looks set to return from the Note 7 is the use of a USB Type-C charging port, rather than MicroUSB.

In batteries by one manufacturer - likely Samsung SDI - used in the phones in the initial Note 7 recall, inspectors found damage to their upper corners.
