MH370: transport ministers defend suspending search for missing plane

The governments of Australia, Malaysia, and China last week announced they had officially suspended the nearly three-year search for the plane in the Indian Ocean.

The Fugro Equator search vessel returned to port in Perth for the last time on Monday, where it was was met by the three transport ministers.

During a ceremony to mark the search vessel's return, Darren Chester, the Australian transport minister, said it was understandable relatives were disappointed.

"I understand the disappointment and frustration felt by the families", he said.

Last week, Malaysia, Australia and China announced that the deep-sea search for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 had been suspended, perhaps forever, after a sonar scan of 120,000 square kilometres (46,000 square miles) of the Indian Ocean west of Australia failed to find any trace of the Boeing 777 that vanished on March 8, 2014, with 239 people on board after flying far off course during a trip from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to Beijing.

The meeting with his Malaysian counterpart Liow Tiong Lai was informal, according to the statement.

The Voice370 group said on Sunday that a spokeswoman, Danica Weeks, would deliver personal letters to Liow, asking him to resume the search for the plane.

Barrow sworn in as Gambia's president on Thursday in the Embassy of the Gambia in the Senegalese capital, Dakar. ECOWAS, AU and the United Nations also promised to ensure that the new Gambian government paves way for Mr.

In 2015, it was confirmed that the flight MH370 was crashed when a wing part washed ashore on Reunion Island in the western Indian Ocean.

Families and relatives of the passengers from the missing plane have criticized authorities for announcing the suspension of the search that cost the three countries more than 150 million U.S. dollars.

"We will say that, although we didn't locate the plane ... we have overcome these 120,000sq km search".

"This has been an extraordinary search effort, it's been in some of the most inhospitable oceans in the world", Chester said.

In an update on the Voice370 Facebook page, Keen was said to have "conveyed the hopes of the MH370 families and the public for the continuation of the search for MH370". None of the items were recovered by the official search team.

Liow said the investigation into the plane's disappearance would continue.

"It's highly likely that the area now defined by the experts contains the aircraft, but that's not absolutely for certain", Greg Hood, the ATSB chief, said Monday, adding that the bureau would have continued the search for the missing plane if the search was not called off by governments in Malaysia, Australia and China.
