Gambia's Jammeh asked to vacate sit

Iran welcomed peaceful power transition in Gambia as the former President Yahya Jammeh left the country following 22 years in power, Press TV reported on Sunday.

Gambia's defeated leader Yahya Jammeh waves to supporters as he departs from Banjul airport on Saturday.

Barrow sworn in as Gambia's president on Thursday in the Embassy of the Gambia in the Senegalese capital, Dakar.

Famously mercurial, Jammeh initially shocked Gambians by conceding his election loss to Barrow in December.

The Speaker also commended President Buhari and leaders of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) for prevailing on Jammeh to leave office. And it is a giant step forward for African democracy.

The new president of Gambia has assured the people of the country of adequate security, just as he also promised to leave behind an enviable legacy at the end of his tenure.

In a late night televised address, Mr Jammeh said he has always put above and everything else the independence of the free and proud people of the Gambia and will always work together with Gambians to defend that independence they have so dearly fought for and won.

"Under worldwide law in fact you can't amnesty certain crimes like torture and massive or systematic political killings", he said in an email.

ECOWAS, AU and the United Nations also promised to ensure that the new Gambian government paves way for Mr. Jammeh's return to The Gambia at any time he chooses.

Respect abounds as Patriots host Steelers in AFC title game
The Patriots figure to load up to stop Le'Veon Bell on early downs and double Antonio Brown in obvious passing situations. Brady hasn't thrown an interception against the Steelers since 2005, while throwing 19 touchdown passes.

But critics have raised concerns over the wording of a statement issued by the UN, ECOWAS and the African Union that seemed to offer Jammeh comfortable guarantees for his future.

He also said he would improve Gambia's relationships with the global community, rejoin the Commonwealth of former British-ruled states and the worldwide Criminal Court.

Experts told AFP the document was not legally binding and would be left to the interpretation of the new government.

"According to information we received, there is no money in the coffers", Barrow said.

One of the highlights is that ECOWAS will halt every military action in Gambia.

He said that, given appropriate orders, he would open the doors to the notorious prisons.

Security forces swept the President's official residence State House for hidden explosives, said Halifa Sallah, a spokesman Barrow's coalition.

Senegal, along with several other African nations have also deployed its troops in Gambia.
