Rusty Patched Bumblebee is Declared Endangered

In a blog post Wednesday, the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation applauded the listing, but noted more work is needed to save the bees, especially when it comes to cutting back on insecticides. A year later, the Xerces Society joined forces with the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), and sued the Department of the Interior and the FWS in an effort to get this bee protected.

"Addressing some of the threats that the rusty patched bumble bee faces from pesticide, to exposure to diseases, to habitat loss will certainly help a wide variety of other native pollinators", said Sarina Jepson, endangered species program director for the Xerces Society, which has advocated for listing the bee for almost a decade. The bee had been common across 28 states and two Canadian provinces, the wildlife service reported, but has experienced an 87 percent population decline and is now limited to 13 states and one province. "Some populations are so small that it is unclear whether they still exist". For economically important crops such as tomatoes, cranberries, and peppers alone, it's estimated that pollinators provide environmental services of $3 billion in the USA alone. Imagine our nation's wildlands devoid of flowers, and consider the astronomical cost of hand-pollination of our crops. "Addressing the threats that the rusty patched bumble bee faces will help not only this species, but countless other native pollinators that are so critical to the functioning of natural ecosystems and agriculture".

This landmark decision was made in "a race against extinction" of the Bombus affinis which is "balancing precariously on the brink of extinction", the agency said in its announcement Tuesday.

He missed four games earlier in the season due to back spasms but has been relatively healthy outside of the back ailments. This season, Rose is averaging 17.3 points, 4.5 assists and 3.9 rebounds per game.

Information is lacking on parasites and pathogens in North American bees, according to the FWS, but the relevant studies have raised alarms.

Melius says there are steps the public can now take to help pollinators like the rusty patched bumble bee. Many of these threats act in combination. "And also concerns about climate change, because climate change can intensify weather events that can affect this bee population", she says. The queen is revived in the spring to build a new colony with a new batch of fertilized eggs. These bees nest in the ground, and may also be susceptible to accumulated pesticides in the soil. Limit or avoid use of pesticides if possible, and always follow label instructions carefully. Leave some areas of your yard un-mowed in summer and unraked in fall; in your garden and flower beds, leave some standing plant stems in winter.

In the USA, there have been other species that have decreased in population over the past years.
