La La Land lands 11 BAFTA nominations

Damien Chazelle is nominated for both Director and Original Screenplay and Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone for Leading Actor and Leading Actress.

Other titles in contention for the outstanding British film award include Harry Potter spin-off Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, which has five nominations in all.

Best-picture nominees are "La La Land"; "Arrival"; welfare-state drama "I, Daniel Blake"; Miami coming-of-age story "Moonlight"; and soul-baring domestic drama "Manchester by the Sea".

Meanwhile, voting for the nods at biggest night of the film awards year are still open - Academy members vote on the Oscar nominees January 5 - 13 this year, before the finalists are announced on January 24.

Last year's BAFTA film awards honored the same actors that would go on to win Oscars in three out of four categories, as well as director Alejandro G. Iñárritu. There was also a surprise nomination for Emily Blunt and her starring role in "Girl on the Train", an adaptation of Paula Hawkins's page-turning psychological thriller.

As announced by Dominic Cooper and Sophie Turner at BAFTA's London headquarters, this year's nominees constitute some of the top film artists from the United Kingdom, U.S., and beyond.

Grant, who appears with Streep in Florence Foster Jenkins, is joined in the supporting actor category by fellow Britons Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Dev Patel.

The BAFTAs differ from their USA counterpart in having a separate category for best British film.

Winners of the British trophies, known as BAFTAs, will be announced at London's Royal Albert Hall on February 12, two weeks before the Oscars.
