Apple App Store Subscription Billings Jump Amid Fee Cut

Apple App Store Subscription Billings Jump Amid Fee Cut

The move takes down the newspaper's English- and Chinese-language apps in China, though apps from The Financial Times, The Wall Street Journal, and other worldwide publications are still available.

For technology giant Apple Inc's App Store, 1 January 2017 turned out to be its busiest single day ever, registering a whopping $240 million in customer purchases.

The newspaper's website has been blocked in China since 2012 and many Western publications have struggled to make their material available in the country, although several other U.S. newspaper apps remain available in the country.

"The request by the Chinese authorities to remove our apps is part of their wider attempt to prevent readers in China from accessing independent news coverage by The New York Times of that country", the New York Times spokeswoman Eileen Murphy told Reuters.

Among the App Store's more than 2 million offerings, Apple said Pokemon Go was the most downloaded app.

A number of other Western websites like Google, YouTube and Facebook are also blocked in China. The restrictions on speech and expression in China have grown steadily over the past four years.

Tucker Carlson To Take Over Megyn Kelly's Time Slot On Fox News
Some cable news observers had speculated Fox would replace Kelly with one of the four women who had filled in for her at 9 p.m. It is likely the hope of Fox News management that Carlson will fit so well that " The Kelly File " will be quickly forgotten.

China is one of Apple's biggest markets for iPhones.

Apple CEO Tim Cook is a frequent visitor to the People's Republic and the company has made several large-scale investments in the country.

When it comes to specific regions, Apple took a moment to brag about its growth in China - where it showed a record 90 percent growth last year compared to the year before.

Even if the timing was a coincidence, the development underlines how USA information technology companies are being forced to play by China's rules if they want to do business there - even at some cost to their reputations in the West.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang told reporters Thursday that he was "not really aware" of the removal of the New York Times app.

The apps, which the newspaper said were removed on December 23, are the latest Western services to fall foul of Chinese authorities, whose other scalps include Apple's own iBooks and iTunes Movies stores which have been blocked since April.
