Mass escape after prison riot in Brazil claims 56 lives

Past year at least 367 people were killed in the country's prisons and jails. Fifty-six inmates were killed.

Officials said they had recaptured 40 so far, among them the man who appears in the selfie with Bremer.

Brazilian police staged a massive manhunt Tuesday for scores of convicts who escaped during a prison riot that ended with 56 inmates killed by their rivals, many of them beheaded.

One hundred and twelve prisoners used the chaos to escape and have melted into the surrounding Amazon jungle.

"An inmate is not a commodity and can not be the object of a contract", said Marcos Fuchs, vice president of the National Council of Criminal and Prison Policies.

That was after Umanizzare signed a contract with Amazonas in 2015 for the consortium to run state prisons for 27 years at an estimated cost of 205 million reais a year, and received a payment of 198 million reais at the time of signing, said Almeida.

04 de enero de 2017, 17:26Brasilia, Jan 4 (Prensa Latina) The United Nations said in a statement today that the recent massacre in a prison in Manaus was not an isolated event, but reflects the chronic situation of prisons in Brazil.

Sergio Fontes, head of public security for Amazonas, said a total of 184 prisoners took advantage of the chaos and escaped.

Who is Elor Azaria? Israeli Soldier Convicted Over Death Of Palestinian
Heller said Azaria acted contrary to the rules for opening fire and gave testimony that was inconsistent and not credible. Israel's military has said it believes a significant number of them were essentially on suicide missions.

Outside, heavily armed police hunted for inmates who escaped through a series of tunnels discovered at the Anisio Jobim penitentiary complex.

The violence was the latest clash between inmates aligned with PCC, Brazil's most-powerful drug gang, and a local Manaus criminal group known as the North Family.

The guards hired by the company were poorly trained and could be easily bribed due to their low salaries, according to a ministry report on conditions at the prison in 2016.

Late Monday, Melo ordered prisoners linked to the First Command be transferred to a prison built in 1907 that had been deactivated in October due to poor conditions.

"When you put inmates from rival factions in the same prison unit, the state has no control over what happens inside".

"Nobody knows who is alive or dead", Santos told the Associated Press news agency.

But jailing drug traffickers has done little to solve the problem.
