Charleston church shooter Dylann Roof confesses, 'I am not sorry'

"I am not sorry", Roof wrote. "I do feel sorry for the innocent white children forced to live in this sick country".

Last month jurors convicted Roof of federal murder and hate crimes charges for the June 2015 massacre at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston.

The prosecutor presented new evidence, including a jailhouse journal that he said was written six weeks after Roof's arrest.

Today, the judge in Dylann Roof's federal trial has denied a defense request to represent Roof during the rest of the sentencing phase instead of Roof representing himself. "Other than the fact that I trust people that I should not and the fact that I am probably better at constantly embarrassing myself than anyone who has ever existed, there is nothing wrong with me psychologically". Just two days ago after nearly eight hours of testimony, the federal judge presiding over the case ruled that Roof is competent to stand trial, and he is competent to represent himself. Williams emphasized that Roof was capable of remorse and regret, reminding jurors that he had left his mother a note of apology, but only for the pain he knew his actions would cause his own family. "He killed them because they were less than people" in his view, Mr Williams added.

She said at her funeral she wanted red nail polish. "I just didn't know what to do", he said, breaking into tears.

Not knowing for certain if the danger had passed, Pinckney dialed 911 and breathlessly told an operator she had heard shots inside the church. "Anything you heard from my lawyers in the last phase [of the trial], I ask you to forget it", he told jurors. During discussions in court about Roof's representation, his lawyers have said they feared their client wouldn't introduce evidence that could potentially spare his life out of concern it might embarrass himself or his family.

Macy's locations across the country will be shutting down this year, but the University Park Mall store in Mishawaka is safe. Macy's is third brick-and-mortar store in Tulsa to announce plans to close in 2017.

Assistant US Attorney Nathan Williams told jurors Roof deserved to die because of the number of people he killed, his racist motives, the planning he put into the slayings, the emotional toll on friends and relatives, and Roof's utter lack of remorse.

But it remains unclear how she will proceed with her own prosecution of Roof after a jury decides his sentence for his 33 convictions in the federal case.

At the Boston Marathon bombing trial of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, Roof's motion says, 13 family members gave victim impact testimony and the transcript length of their entire testimony equalled that of the four witnesses that testified on day one of Roof's sentencing phase.

"In an order, the judge detailed how Roof can behave while in court", Alexandra Olgin of South Carolina Public Radio reports.

Rev. Anthony Thompson cried as he testified that he and his wife Myra had plans to pursue religious careers and work in the church.

Prosecutors in both cases are seeking the death penalty against Roof, who is from the Columbia area.
