A Buckingham Palace guard 'nearly shot' the Queen by accident

A former guard at London's Buckingham Palace recounted the unusual event to The Times Diary, in which the Queen was mistaken for an intruder - and the guardsman "nearly shot" her.

To his amazement it was the Queen. Relieved, he couldn't help but say, "Bloody hell, Your Majesty, I almost shot you!"

A Buckingham Palace guardsman once almost shot the Queen as she went for a night-time stroll around the palace grounds. "Next time I'll ring through beforehand so you don't have to shoot me".

Britain's Queen Elizabeth II was not able to attend the New Year's Day church service on Sunday due to a heavy cold.

She is once believed to have chatted away with a group of tourists, who had not recognised her during a paid visit to see parts of Buckingham Palace.

The palace announced on December 20 she would step down as patron of several charities and other organizations to reduce her workload.

Palace officials have stressed that the Queen is continuing to work on official papers despite her illness.

To this, she replied in her usual, quirky manner that next time, she will make sure to call him up before taking a walk so nobody confuses her with an outsider. She's now recuperating at her Sandringham estate.

Despite of years of political, social and cultural change, Queen Elizabeth has maintained her popularity as a monarch since she became queen on February 6, 1952 with the age of just 25. One day after she reportedly became ill, photographers captured footage of a helicopter leaving with a route towards Sandringham, a place where she winters. Still, other British Royals attended the annual St. Mary Magdalene Church services.

Elizabeth also missed the Christmas church service last week for the first time in decades.
