Dan Kay Dies: 'Survivor' Contestant Was 40

Kay was an attorney from Brookline, New Hampshire who competed on the reality show at the age of 32.

Dan Kay, a former Survivor contestant, died unexpectedly on December 31, 2016 at the age of 40. "His desire to be challenged and his quest for adventure lead to his participation on the reality show, 'Survivor",' the obituary noted.

According to PEOPLE, Kay practiced law in Boston before competing on "Survivor: Gabon" in 2008 after a mid-life crisis.

A funeral for Dan will be held on Saturday in Manchester, New Hampshire. "The Survivor family sends our love to Dan's family", Probst tweeted Tuesday. "Kay-104311956" target="_blank">obituary from Lambert Funeral Home & Creamatory.

George Michael was unrecognizable before death
In January 1989, George Michael accepted one of his three American Music Awards during ceremonies in Los Angeles. That was also year the American sitcom Will & Grace went on the air, which featured a gay lead character.

Kay was eventually voted out on Day 21, finishing 11th out of 18 survivors. Kay was a native of Walpole, Massachusetts, and received his undergraduate degree from UMass-Amherst. The cause of death is unknown, but foul play is not suspected.

Along with his two children, Kay is survived by his mother Jean Ann, his sister Andrea, two nieces, and his girlfriend Reese Elizabeth Kay.

In his intro video for the show, he spoke about how his athleticism and his intelligence could benefit him on "Survivor". His obituary describes his hobbies as "running, skiing, listening to music, and attending Crossway Christian Church".
