Romney Changes His Tune On Trump As President-Elect Weighs State Dept. Pick

Steve Mnuchin, a potential pick to serve as Treasury Secretary, right, and Stephen Miller, a policy adviser to President-elect Donald Trump get on an elevator at Trump Tower, Monday, Nov. 28, 2016, in NY.

Senator Bob Corker, who is chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, will arrive at Trump Tower on Tuesday to talk about the position with the President-elect.

GOP Chair Reince Priebus was also present at the meeting (although the name does sound like a dish on the menu).

Trump - who since his November 8 win has been huddled with his transition team trying to fill Cabinet posts and other key administration positions - is "furious" with Conway, MSNBC's "Morning Joe" reported Monday, reportedly based on information from two transition team sources.

There are also suggestions that both Vice President Mike Pence and Priebus favor Romney - although it's not clear how far either will go on prevailing on Trump to pick him.

On Monday, however, two high-level sources on Trump's transition team told MSNBC's Morning Joe that some of Trump's aides were reportedly "baffled" by Conway's comments and were concerned that she was "pushing her own agenda", adding that this behavior was "dangerous", according to the broadcast.

Trump announced his choice of Price, while the selection of Chao was confirmed by a person with knowledge of the decision but not authorized to speak publicly.

The president-elect appeared to still be torn over his choice for secretary of state. "He showed a great grasp of the variety of challenges that are out there and some of the opportunities as well", Petraeus told reporters.

The former Central Intelligence Agency chief pleaded guilty past year to a misdemeanor charge of mishandling classified information relating to documents he had provided to his biographer, with whom he was having an affair.

Trump, in a 2015 interview promoted on his campaign website, pledged not to cut expensive entitlement programs that Republicans have fought for years to cut to help reduce the federal deficit.

Trump's decision to consider Romney for the powerful Cabinet post has sparked a public backlash from some of his closest aides and allies.

Conway - who joined the Trump campaign in the closing stages of the race and helped guide the first-time candidate to what once seemed an improbable victory - shot back at the accusations.

The protracted theatrics over the top State Department job contrast with the brisk efficiency of the rest of the Trump transition, which after an erratic start has now moved into high gear.

Conway tweeted Monday that she's expressed her opinion to Trump and will support his decision.

Trump offered no context for his message. "Kellyanne doesn't have a job yet, and she's angry about that", Scarborough said.

But picking Romney over several other loyalists - such as former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani or former U.N. Ambassador John Bolton - has exposed discord within the Trump camp.

And Trump may also have been irritated by Giuliani's campaigning for the job on television.

Those close to the transition insisted on anonymity in commenting because they were not authorized to publicly discuss the private process.

Meanwhile, recounts in Wisconsin are set to begin Thursday, following Green Party candidate Jill Stein's petition. Stein, who is also pursuing recounts in Pennsylvania and MI, has raised concerns that the results may have been hacked. He also falsely claimed that millions of people had voted illegally in the presidential election and provided no evidence to back up the baseless charge. Under Chao at Labor, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration didn't issue a single significant new safety regulation for four years.
