Swedes create hotline to raise mansplaining awareness

Now, we only need a Mansplainers Anonymous hotline for sexists to get help changing their ways.

On Monday, Swedish union Unionen launched a hotline for workers fed up with receiving unsolicited, condescending lectures from their male colleagues. "It is always the case when you discuss gender equality".

A large Swedish trade union has been running a weeklong hotline where people can talk about condescending or patronizing co-workers in an effort to raise awareness about workplace sexism and start a discussion about relations between employees. "Both women and men carrying valuable experience for such a type of activity". For those who don't know, Unionen-Sweden's largest union and creator of the hotline-defines mansplaining as when "a man explains something to a woman without being asked, particularly something which she might already know more about than the man".

An often-asked question was "what to do if a female co-worker is being ignored by a man in your work group", Zetterstrom said. "I thought that was such a great thing to do, and not least for the man to take on this responsibility". She described attending a party at which a man insisted on explaining to her a "very important book" he had heard about and did not immediately seem to absorb that she had written the book.

American Olympian Molly Huddle, who broke the U.S. 10,000m record in Rio, will be making her marathon debut. He's in search of a podium place after fourth-placed finishes this year in London and the Rio Games.

"A common question has been: 'How do I know I've been doing this?'"

Still, the Unionen Facebook page offers fierce arguments in Swedish against the mansplaining concept, using the same debate points many Americans use: "It's just about authority, not gender", "women do it too", and the infamous, "not all men".

"Obviously not all men subject all women to mansplaining all of the time", wrote Peter Tai Christensen, one of the gender experts who will be manning the phone lines. However, Unionen still plans on helping to reduce mansplaining in the workplace.
